When the clients shared their brief for a “down to earth” look for their common entertainment space for a joint family, the internal introspection within us as a firm was important. To curate bespoke interiors typical to a site and a client has always been a principle at Spaces and Design and it was again a chance for us to revisit our instinct to “ constantly innovate”.
A look at the site and an interaction with the client was enough for us to get started. We related the down to earth appeal to going down to basic materials but yet with understated elegance since it was to be a party zone for most occasions. The clients’ love for all things concrete gave birth to all finishes and effects in cement and concrete and hence the name “CONCRETE DWELLING”
The 3000sft odd living space was to be used specifically for entertainment. Our bonus was an added veranda that ran across the length of the huge living space and dining areas; not to mention the beautiful garden view beyond that, that truly makes the understated interiors an Inside-Out feel.
The zoning and layout was shuffled in the old bungalow in such a manner that whenever and wherever one sits the expanse of garden should not be missed.
As soon as one crosses the main large and bare entrance foyer, glass doors invite you to a large living space or another one to a puja area that houses a beautiful revamped and redressed red chandelier one of the familys’ ancestral possession add mist to the purity of pure white corian walls.
In general and overall the mood board created is in Cement and RCC concrete details with a ratio of love
( 1:2:4 ; pun intended!)
The awe inspiring entry into the large living space is due to first the large one zone seating for a big group. The centrepiece four tables that occupy a whopping space of 64sft are made of basic black metal and walnut wood. The sixty’s style sofa’s and leather chairs could not be more basic. A large backdrop of cemented tiles still awaits an iconic installation but even without it has a defined play of light, shade and shadows due to its undulated cladding detail.
Moving further is another small circular seating that changes the dimension of the room.
The bar stands out as a complete stunner. Not only in the placement overlooking the garden but also in its “RAW” appeal. Casted out of pure concrete and kept raw, the touch of the saw cut oak strips over it moves one close to nature. The polished cement does not give an unfinished feel.
Further the clients brief of live Tapayenki for guests was extended as a part of the 12 feet long jamun wood table top especially curetted by Woods capes, Auroville. The view of the vertical gardens to the eye and the feel of raw concrete floor to the feet arouses curiosity to the senses as one enjoys the culinary delights being cooked live. The perfect light ambiences by Flos is unmatchable! A large grid of black metal on the wall with local logs made as shelves is used for live miniature plants and curios and memoirs.
The seamless raw concrete floor takes you further up to a silent large patio that boasts of a corner view of the plush garden.
The adjoining powder toilet offers view of the green space as well through the wooden lattice work.
We at ‘Spaces and Design’ kept the techniques and finishes in our concrete dwelling basic and raw yet elegant and rich! Whether it is the archiconcrete* finish by Asian paints, open pore wood furniture by Casa international and Arte brotto or handmade black metal handles of the doors, we underplayed everything that one sees, touches and feels.
The result is a space that offers stillness and peace of mind that cannot be described but only experienced!
