Airavaat

a home in the clouds

AIRAVAAT

The land

The site is located on the outskirts of bustling Mumbai, in the quiet of the Sahyadri hills. The sweeping views of the Western Ghats in almost any direction are the highlight of this otherwise simple parcel of land. The capturing and framing of these picturesque landscapes was the primary inspiration behind the architecture.

In response to the topographical context

The rubric of the various levels of the house are derived from the natural terracing of the land.

The Welcome

The arrival is planned at the highest point under a large canopy that almost acts as a wing framing the first glimpse of this house in the clouds. The entrance view is that of a floating lotus pod that breathes in a freshness on entering after a long drive out of the city.

Material & Structure

The architectural language is a simple intersection between steel and concrete. 2 parallel concrete walls act as the main axis cutting across the house and seamlessly connecting the all the spaces thus formed.

The Communal space

The steel bridge which houses the entertainment zone, is suspended between the common spaces to the north and the residence block to the south allowing for the natural terrain of the ground to flow under it undisturbed.

The Courtyard

The triangular courtyard in the center manages to connect every space and keep the scale intimate.

Material Palette & Composition

Materials have been strategically planned for the various blocks – using glass and steel for the public spaces and slate stone for the private spaces, both of which get anchored into the concrete spine.

As you move through the house, you feel as though the house moves along with you.
