The research addresses how the environment, our perception and the structure itself work together to classify „Motion‟ and how it can be employed as a dominant concept in Architecture. In this context, Motion refers to the possible ways of making a structure look like it appears to be moving or is actually moving.
DESIGN INTERVENTION
Exploratorium – a centre where visitors have the opportunity to experience and handle exhibits, perform prearranged experiments, etc. The world around us is changing rapidly which makes the role played by Architecture even more crucial as the days go by. Building Technology now plays an important role in not only responding to Climate change, but also increasing needs for space and flexibility. In India, we lack a platform to showcase and build the awareness of these new technological developments. Events for this purpose have taken place, but have only had a short-term impact. In a time where the world is falling apart due to a global crisis, the existence of a more significant platform has become mandatory in this need of the hour.
“DESIGN FOR CROSSING THE BORDER BETWEEN PRODUCT AND ARCHITECTURE”
Thus, an „Exploratorium‟ has been proposed, that will incorporate the concepts of the research conducted to create a space dedicated to the developments in Building technology. A space that showcases and allows people to “explore” its various aspects, thereby increasing awareness and sensitivity to this field.
CONNECTION OF RESEARCH TO DESIGN
The field of Architecture has become very wide and is not limited to Static architecture. Everything is moving but not always in a physical way.
The Aim of the Research conducted was to understand the various ways in how Motion could be expressed in the built form. In this context, Motion refers to the possible ways of making a structure look like it appears to be moving or is actually moving.
Classification :
1. Static Motion – The building is still
2. Kinetic Motion – The building is moving
3. Illusory Motion – The building is still but appears to be moving
PROGRAM
The core of the program lies in letting the visitor experience the exhibition gallery first and then be lead to view all the different zones simultaneously while on the signified path. The Two plazas have a distinct connection to segregate the flow of the Main circulation in the site, with illusory motion being used in the major transition area as a signifier. The Hierarchy of spaces in terms of zones and form give opportunities for people to experience more about building technology while staying on one path.
Section AA’ : Cuts through Exhibition gallery 1(Vertical Maze) and Exhibition gallery 2(Bridges) which showcases the flexibility and multiple options in being able to exhibit Building technology on the basis of its requirement.
Section BB’ : Cuts through the Site and Auditorium space which would be used for Presentations and lectures on certain Building technology. The Structure Elevation is seen with its characterised shadows being formed along with the Recreational ground where interactive outdoor exhibits will be placed that will be accessible to all age groups.
ARD
The steel structural frame and reinforced concrete walls are bound together by a thin rigid Ferro-cement shell, acting as a seismic diaphragm, forming the composite structural system of the Exploratorium.
