AIM

To design a globally respected management institute by taking into account the vernacular architecture of Himachal Pradesh.

ABSTRACT

An institution as a community comprises numerous students who are from different variety of cultures and regions.
I designed a globally respected management institute by taking into account the vernacular architecture of Himachal Pradesh.

As the site provides a dynamic view of the river, forest, and mountain, the design is such that the courts open up towards them. The road is used to divide residential and academic areas. Major building orientation is the east- west direction to gain maximum sunlight during winter and minimum during summer.

I studied the vernacular architecture of Himachal Pradesh, the availability of local materials, and their properties and uses. Hence used locally available Sandstone, clay pots, and bamboo.

I studied IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore to understand the program, function, types of spaces, and relation between the spaces required. Hence master planning is done such that it separates residential and academic areas. Also, All the spaces are connected with open courts to create interaction and spillover. Green patches are used to create a buffer. Every space gets privacy at the same time it also gets proper interaction spaces. Double height corridors are provided. A triple heightened reading space with a forest view is proposed in the library to create a magnificent area. The connecting bridge is provided to connect all the academic areas. In the entrance lift and staircase are directly provided to reduce the traffic.

I studied Teri University to understand climate-responsive steps and strategies. As it’s a composite climate design is such that it heats up in winter and cools down in summer. I proposed a double wall and clay pot slab to slow down the heat transfer. Also, design is such that major Southern sunlight is captured during winter and harsh sunlight from western and eastern directions during summer are obstructed. Solar panels are used to shade the roof. Green courts are provided to balance the temperature. Existing northern trees are used to block the harsh cold wind. Earth air tunnel system saves electrical load and uses natural earth temperature to balance the interior and exterior temperature. It is helpful during both the summer and winter seasons.

Overall, I learned to design climate responsive and master planning globally respected institute cum residential building.
