SIDEBOARDS

The silent mediator, the sidelined, the unspoken yet the pièce de résistance of any space, a sideboard occupies a special corner in every home where memories are relived, interests are nurtured and personalities come to life.

Today we are going to dwell upon this very polite family of furniture and what makes them a  unique addition to any space.

The purpose of pitching a sideboard into any space may seem straightforward,

to facilitate storage.

But, what truly makes it unique and a versatile furniture family lies in the manner in which it is stylised and presented. Style may manifest on the aesthetic makeup of its skin, and/or simply by the addition of other decor elements to it. It is the perfect stage to showcase artforms, memorabilia, photography, countertop lighting, books, potted greens etc.

Collectively, art and sideboards conceive a space that is indeed very rich in expression.

We came across a furniture design duo Maulika Gandhi and her father Pramod Gandhi of Magnolia based out of Mumbai, India, who churn out some of the most tasteful sideboards in the market.

The company focuses on blending modern functionality with vintage-inspired aesthetics in all its carefully engineered pieces. The designs are brought to life in their production workshop and showcase some very charming Indian teakwood sideboards finished with polishes or distresses.

If you are looking to add a spot of vintage flavour into your space, here are some trending looks by Magnolia for you to take inspiration from.

Antalya

Finished in a dark blue tone, the choice of tone lays great emphasis on the geometry of the jaali-like pattern seen on the shutter’s panels. An inlay of mirror instils a touch of finesse, further enhancing the geometry.

The design is completed beautifully by framing this composition within the classic top and bottom moulding. A perfect reminisce of traditional jaali windows of vernacular homes in India.

Moving into two-toned sideboards Narang sets a classical colonial touch to any space in a deep army green tone. Enhancing that effect are formal striped shutter panels and classic beading of the drawers. Brass cabinet handles and bolts add a hint of shimmer to the piece.

Framed by classic-accented moulding at the top and bottom, the composition is set to fit into any space bringing along with it a colonial flavour.

Fleur Chest

The rustic unfinished look is taken up a notch with Fluer Chest, taking ‘vintage’ to a whole new level. Right from the unpolished and stone-grey finish, the intricate foliage carvings, to the antique shell/finger hoop handles; it instils a sense of mystery similar to that of antique furniture.

Instilling an old french country vibe, this chest of drawers is a perfect whisper of history, right in your living space.

ZAINAB

This cool grey composition belongs to Magnolia’s range of the ‘weathered & unfinished’ antique look.

Its uniqueness lies in its symmetry of carvings etched onto folding shutter panels on either side,  featuring organic florals and foliage.

A perfect introduction of the natural and untamed into any space.

Turning the clock a little forward in time is this piece of work where simplicity is celebrated and material is brought to the fore. Timber is highlighted, in grain and tone, framed neatly within dark borders.

A fitting addition to a space that preaches a mid-century modern, Scandinavian or Boho inspired style.

Kea

The rustic appeal of a copper patina-toned sideboard beautifully imitates the beauty of metal albeit in a new form. Its oxidised aesthetic, intricate foliage carvings, diamond muntins, classic reeded legs instil an antique look as if moulded from metal. What is most striking is the accented tone of turquoise which adds a unique pop of colour into your lifestyle.

The red crackle finished sideboard with fluted detail takes one down a Parisian lane to reminisce romantic chronicles. There is indeed art in the crackle itself and the colour red speaks volumes of emotions related to it.

The cabriole legs add a vintage touch to the design and are beautifully highlighted in a deeper tone.
