Captured in Singapore, the image features the famous 5 star hotel, Marina Bay Sands, designed by Safdie Architects, in the background. The building is beautifully framed by the Merlion and its spout of water.
"Bridging the gap between the old and new" is a common phrase used in Architecture. It's our expression of merging design with the conservation of history in the contemporary world. More than the phrase itself, its interesting to observe the design engineering that accomplishes this practice. We've taken a pit-stop to London to visit this structure, where an intricate diagrid roof canopy of the 21st century acknowledges the presence of its heritage counterpart built-in 1852. The buildings in the background seem ordinary but they are part of a much larger picture of Singapore's city fabric. Facilitated by the HDB (Housing Development Board) authority of Singapore, the low cost housing scheme took the country out of a housing crisis within a short span of 10 years from its initiation. The country remains successfully freed of slums to this day.
The urban fabric of Singapore's Central Business District (CBD) Amid skyscrapers like these that tower over gigantically all around, there is very little sky visible at a comfortable eye-level wrt the human anthropometric scale. What is more unsettling is that the streetscape below darkens substantially and is overwhelmed by the enormity of each structure and their proximity to one another. It is refreshing to spot buildings that break that discomfort like the MYP Centre, formerly known as the Straits Trading Building (to the left). By reflecting what lies beyond the tiny crevice across its glass facades, it is reassuring to know that light can be indirectly choreographed to brighten the dark streets and that there are indeed blue skies up ahead. The skin of a building is a big contributor to the city fabric.
Captured in Singapore, the building in the background features 'The Old Hill Street Police Station', which was occupied by the Singapore police force. The classic 6-storey building is famous for its window shutters painted in the colours of the rainbow.
Captured in Singapore, the photograph showcases the built skyline along the Singapore River at Boat Quay. The composition highlights the juxtaposition of old shophouse architecture along the riverfront which were used as a trading port in the 1800s. The 21st-century skyscrapers in the background is a testament to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles's vision of 'future Singapore' as a trading capital and modern metropolis.
Captured in Singapore, the photograph showcases the statue titled First Generation, located along the Singapore River at Boat Quay. It consists of life-sized statues of 5 boys playfully jumping into the river, in frozen motion. The bronze statue belongs to the People of the River series of statues, depicting life as it once was along the river. It captures a period of ancient Singapore when the island was gradually establishing itself as an ASEAN trading hub. Life along the river was different and lesser restricted to what it is now. The river was an important element of the everyday lifestyle of early settlers.
Multi-award winning project, the Cloud Forest and Flower Domes conservatories are the largest climate-cooled and sustainable glasshouses in the world, composed of gridshell structures & arched steel ribs. Rich in plant diversity, each of the domes is home to some of the most exotic plant species on the planet. The 20,000sqm plus intervention was designed by a British led team of designers Wilkinson Eyre Architects, Grant Associates, Atelier One & Atelier Ten.

Captured in Singapore, the photographs feature the oldest iron suspension bridge across the Singapore river, surviving in its original state. The bridge was completed in 1869 to connect the colonial offices to the financial district.

A wide array of landscape architectural elements constitute the promenade edge along the Marina Bay and Singapore Straits, and they come to life beautifully even by night! Waterfront gardens, gigantic greenhouses, pavilions, parks, observatories, groves, and so many more spaces continue to unfold. These scenic spaces are located South of the island of Singapore.
