THE PLOT

In the midst of a picturesque tropical gated community, there is an architecture peacefully anchored, basking in the glorious sunshine of Tamil Nadu. Its built form lounges along the lush landscape in quite a calm and modest composure. However what one sees of its peaceful virtue from the outside, may be surprised to unravel  unexpected mysteries from the inside.

Designed for a free-spirited and well travelled family looking for a change of pace, the abode serves as an idyllic holiday retreat on a lavishly spacious plot of land. Receiving the nod for design experimentation and quirk, the sizable plot posed as a perfect platform to uncover the potential of the site; and with space constraints out of the picture, the designers could indeed fire up their creative juices to produce a one-of-a-kind avant garde design, called

Frangipani 14.

Chalking out a concept, executing it and eventually experiencing it, are 3 different aspects of design. Let us discover the experiential aspect of a house that is built upon the premise of mixed virtues.

ARCHITECTURE, The Calm

The first meeting with Frangipani 14 is quite a humble introduction because of its minimalist geometry. A design that is neat, yet not seeking for very much attention. Inspired by the mid-century modern movement of architecture, the building spills across the plot taking full command of the site in the most relaxed fashion. Its composition comprises many cubular built forms that form a connect with the landscape by means of their sheer arrangement. Forming intermediary courts, spill out decks and transition spaces that naturally merge with the landscape. Further binding the indoors and the out are the large glazed fenestration with prussian blue frames, that veil all along the building’s elevation. A perfect invitation to a flood of daylight and of course framed views of the great outdoors. An added bonus to the scheme is the physical connect of all the indoor spaces with the circumambient outdoor landscape.

Complementing this work of architecture is a subtle introduction of zen and tropical inspired landscapes that thread all along the periphery of the built forms in a very polite fashion. Likened in virtue with the architecture, it instils an immense sense of calm. The green landscapes are viscerally stimulating with its very tactile palette. Pebbled pathways, terracing pavers flanked on either side with shrubbery and water cascades, sweet scented palms and ‘birds of paradise’, inquisitive vines levitating from pergolas, a sunkissed swimming pool sits in anticipation amid tropical greens. Dense hedges along the periphery contain this natural composition within the confines of the plot for the clients to treasure and indeed keep all to themselves.

UNRAVELLING THE HIDDEN SPIRIT

The unassuming architecture on the exterior manifests a surprisingly different message to its interior language. It’s vocabulary is a construction of playful words like whimsical, scandanavian, boho, chic, grandeur, luxury, royalty. A mix of many styles but holistically they possess quite a sense of coherence in appeal, with just one message to preach, BOLD. Creating quite the theatrical introduction.

The luxurious holiday home comprises a single level layout canopied by tall ceilings and spacious rooms, creating ample vertical and horizontal space for the designers to experiment with.

Living & Dining

The heart of the site is reserved for a grand invitation into the property, accommodating a large living room and dining. Since this invitation is the climax to the event, it is rendered with uninterrupted vistas of outdoor landscape scenery, in a way that even the greater architecture of the property that extends from its West face, bifurcates to contain a picturesque view for the living space to visually absorb.

It is finished with compositions of rhythmic geometric patterns against a mute grey canvas. Each pattern peps up the space with its own unique language, like the jagged linear pattern rendered by the vibrant blue, soft peach and muted grey Bharat Floor tiles; the striated effect imparted by feature walls & ceilings finished with slated pinewood. Hints of artful accents in shape and color create a unique sense of finesse, seen in the design of the furniture and artistic embellishments.

Two noteworthy art embellishments are namely the levitating white umbrella chandelier that projects into an enchanted cantilever over the formal sitting designed by Philip Stark; the scintillating wall mounted ceramic installation that catches the eye with its vast array of white, prussian blue and copper plated bulbs by Vinod Daroz.

Kitchen

Supporting the main ceremony of the living space is an adjoining open kitchen with a family dining space. Although this section is partially part of the grand living area, it shuns away from the limelight in subdued shades of neutral greys and blues. The floor patterns and slated pinewood ceilings of the living area, bleed into this space in an attempt to unite. Yet it tries to showcase its own sense of identity seen in its line-art grooves projected on the kitchen backdrop, minimalist appeal to the cabinetry and kitchen island, black outline sketches imparted by sleek steel rod furniture and ceiling hung light fixtures. The adjoining powder room by the formal dining imitates a similar character to the open kitchen, finished with unique sanitary and décor fixtures.

Sandwiching the uninterrupted living room vista along its West facing edge are 4 spacious bedrooms with individual attached luxury bathrooms. The 2 guest bedrooms occupying the Northern wing, are arranged in closer connection with the living space. While the family rooms including the master bedroom and sons room, branch out along a lengthy corridor of the Southern wing. This corridor sets a luring invitation of grandeur by the sheer composition of patterns, imparted by the organic wall to ceiling slated pinewood cladding, and the continuation of jagged linear patterns on the floor tiling.

Bed & Bath

All the bedrooms’ aesthetics tone down immensely on geometry to create soft and calm environments to retire into. The walls and flooring are primarily neutral, complemented with soft pastels seen in the selection of bed fabrics and curtain drapery. Sudden surprises of fabric prints appear on decorative cushions or bedroom upholstery, adding a bit of depth into the design. No two bedrooms look alike and their uniqueness is built upon the premise of the above common elements.

Each bedroom sports a different selection of furniture and furnishings that kindle a fresh and unrepeated theme. For example one theme sports a boho look in shades of bright fuschia, with an accent toned vanity and sensuous suede finished bed frame; while another sports a regal look with accents of scintillating brass fixtures of ceiling hung pendant chandeliers and royal furniture silhouettes; or a playful toned down style of black steel rod fixtures, with a warm timber library.

The bathrooms are a luxurious escapade, attached to each of the 4 spacious bedrooms. No two bathrooms are alike, likened in character with the bedrooms. Common elements include patterned floor tiling, luxurious console vanities. The family bathrooms are of superior grandeur with island bathtubs, glass false ceilings with cove lighting, chandeliers, more elaborate and regal vanity consoles. Each bathroom composition has its own palette of colors and textures.

Entertainment

The furthermost space from the property’s core is the large family entertainment room. It’s aesthetic vocabulary is warm, cosy, lounge-like, casual, rustic. Here is where the family immerse themselves in cinematic entertainment or simply disappear into one of the many books from the large floor to ceiling library-tv console.

Each of the spaces of the property gets caressed by the brilliant flood of daylight streaming in through large glazed windows. Bringing to life every nook and cranny of artful tones, hues and patterns and compositions complemented with lush outdoor greens. Rendering a viscerally fulfilling experience for a relaxing vacation.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN

The design of Frangipani 14 is a stylish collage of variety, identity and chic, leaving no room for monotony across its intervention. The experiential process of the built form from the exterior to the interior instils quite a sense of theatre midst transition. Creating such a distinct awareness of their respective languages of exhibitionism.

The intervention sets the stage for a truly international design sense on the premise of experimentation. By virtue of its avant garde craftsmanship and design engineering, it manifests experimentation that works and where all its elements unite into one entity.

With a beautifully free-spirited existence, Frangipani 14 translates into a picturesque escapade to experience, thrive and just ‘be’.
